SPX Classmates Qualify for Tokyo Olympics
St. Pius X Catholic High School classmates Gunnar Bentz '14 and Daniel Haugh '14 clinched spots on the 2020 United States Olympic Team last month. By finishing second in the 200-meter butterfly event, Bentz claimed a spot on the swim team, while Haugh posted a second-place finish in the hammer throw to capture a spot on the track team in the Tokyo Summer Olympic Games which begin Friday, July 23. Although rescheduled for 2021, the event, and teams, retain the Tokyo 2020 name for marketing and branding purposes.
Bentz will be participating in his second Olympiad, earning a gold medal in the Rio Olympic games in 2016 as a member of the 4x200m freestyle relay team. Last month, at the Olympic swimming trials in Omaha, Bentz posted a 1:55.34 in the 200m butterfly to qualify for the team. During his time at St. Pius X, Bentz was a two-time All-American and still holds the state record in the 200m individual medley and the 100m butterfly. The Golden Lions captured their first ever boys' state swim and dive championship in Bentz's senior year.
Haugh joins the track and field team at the Olympic games for the first time. A two-time US Track and Field (USATF) champion in 2018 and 2019, he placed second in the hammer throw on June 20 with a throw of 79.39 meters, or 260.46 feet, to secure a spot on the team in Tokyo. Haugh has also captured the NCAA championship in 2019 and a USATF Indoor national championship the same year. He was a member of the 2013 USATF Junior National team. In his time as a Golden Lion, Haugh won the individual state championship in the hammer throw, weight throw and discus while helping the team to the overall AAA state championship in 2013.
