President's Press: December Happenings

Date:
Tuesday, December 14, 2021

The month of December is flying by and our students are looking forward to finishing exams tomorrow and the Christmas break. Our Campus Ministry Department sponsored a series of activities for the students to help with the stress of exam time. Elective exams took place earlier this week and final exams, as always, are held Wednesday through Friday before break. On Wednesday, Father Michael Bremer, President John Favier, and Director of Operations Blaise Wannamacher handed out goody bags with pencils and snacks prior to the start of exams and Thursday, through the help of Happy Tails Pet Therapy, we welcomed emotional support dogs to campus to join the students between exams. Friday, Campus Ministry plans to supply Krispy Kreme Donuts to the school all in an effort to help calm nerves and keep spirits high.

Our band students had the incredible opportunity to travel to Hawaii and perform in the Pearl Harbor Day parade commemorating the 80th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. While in Hawaii, students stayed in Waikiki Beach and performed at the USS Missouri, toured the USS Arizona Memorial, visited the North Shore, a macadamia nut farm, the Dole pineapple plantation, surfed in the Pacific Ocean, participated in an authentic luau, visited the Punch Bowl National Cemetery, and heard from Pearl Harbor survivors and World War II veterans.

The winter sports season is well underway.  Boys' basketball is ranked No. 3 in the AAAAA polls with a 7-1 record and 4-0 in the region.  Girls' basketball is 5-4 and 3-1 in the region.  Wrestling opened its season with several class wins in the North Murray Invitational.  Swim and Dive has won five straight meets to start the year.  The 20th Christmas Classic will be hosted by both basketball teams December 28-30 with 16 teams from seven different states.

The generosity of the St. Pius X community was on full display on November 30 during the #iGiveCatholic campaign on #GivingTuesday. Two hundred and eighty-six donors from around the country gave to the campaign and helped us raise over $135,000 in a single day of fundraising for St. Pius X. Parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, students, and so many other supporters joined the excitement of the day and gave in support of the Annual Fund. We wrapped up the day as the number one fundraiser in the Archdiocese of Atlanta and ranked fourteenth nationally for amount raised in the #iGiveCatholic campaign. We are sincerely grateful for all of our donors and the love you continue to show our beloved school.

As we look ahead to the new year, our annual Trivia Night is back and in person! Consider joining our alumni, parents, parents of alumni, and friends of St. Pius X (21 and up, please!) for the 15th Annual Trivia Night at St. Pius X on January 15, 2022 in the Mark Kelly Gym. Registration is open with early bird pricing through December 17. Tables sell out every year, so please register today for this wonderful event that supports the Alumni Scholarship Fund.
