Summer Practice

The first summer practice date will be Thursday, June 8th and the final practice date will be Saturday, August 5th. Mandatory practices begin on Monday, August 7th. All athletes must have a physical on file to participate in summer practices.

Mileage – Runners will be capable of recording their total summer miles (link on main page). If they keep track of their miles and run enough over the summer, they will receive a summer mileage reward shirt at the end of the summer. This is optional, but encouraged to be at your best.

Strava – An easy way to keep track of your mileage, especially if you get a GPS watch, is to create an account on Strava. Once you create an account, go to the training tab at the top and click on “training log”. I recommend that you keep your log marked as private or only visible to those you approve to follow you.  Then go to the explore tab at the top and click on “clubs” and search for the club “SPX Distance Running” and join the club. Once you do this and connect your GPS watch to the strava app, then it will upload them for you and you can easily see your weekly mileage on the site. A paid membership is not required.

Schedule – This will be the preliminary practice schedule. If I need to change it, then I will make those changes and announce them via email.

Mondays 7:30am @ Yellow River Park

Tuesdays 7:30am @ Murphy Candler Park

Wednesdays 7:30am @ Chattahoochee River (backup lot)

Thursdays 7:30am @ Mason Mill Park (DeKalb Tennis Center)

Fridays: run on your own.

Saturdays 7:30am @ Chattahoochee River (backup lot)

Weights – There is optional weight training at SPX on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 9:30am. Please only participate in this if you can be consistent with it in order to help avoid injury. Coach Hayes will share with me if any runners are not going consistently enough.

No practice weeks:

May 29th – June 4th: GHSA dead week #1, no practices allowed but runners can begin their summer training schedules.

July 3rd – July 9th : GHSA dead week #2, no practices allowed but runners should still following their summer training schedules.

July 12th – 15th: team camp, all runners not at camp should still be running.

Directions to the Chattahoochee river:

Take I-285W to Exit 22 New Northside Dr. Take a right off the exit ramp and go straight through the light. At the bottom of the hill there will be a bridge. Main parking is the first lot on the right after the bridge. Back up parking will be the lot before the bridge.  Also, there is a charge of $5.00 if you are going to park there, or you can get a year round pass for $35. We will meet in the back up parking lot at 7:30.

Directions to Murphy Candler Park:

Take I-285W to exit 29 Ashford Dunwoody road. Turn left to head south on Ashford Dunwoody. Drive a couple of miles and then turn left on W. Nancy Creek Drive. Take this rod for about a mile and you’ll see a lake on the left. The meeting area is just past the lake with a small parking lot and overflow parking on the right.

Directions to Mason Mill Park:

Take I-285 to exit 39A, US 78 W towards Decatur, Atlanta. Take the Exit for N Druid Hills Road and turn right. Follow this until you reach Clairmont Road and turn left. Shortly after that turn left into the park on McConnell Dr.

Directions to Yellow River Park (3232 Juhan Rd, Stone Mountain, Ga)

Take I-285 to 78 towards Athens. Get off at Rockbrdige road and turn right. Stay left when it turns into annistown road and then turn right onto Juan road. Park in the lot next to the playground.
