AMIE McDOUGAL, Head Varsity Coach
Coach McDougal begins her ninth year as part of the Golden Lion Softball program. She was a four year varsity starter at Chamblee Charter High School and was named All-American as a Junior and Senior. She continued her career at the collegiate level on a full softball scholarship to Oklahoma Panhandle State University, where she earned 1st team All-Conference honors as a junior. "Discipline and Consistency" are valuable lessons Coach McDougal has learned and wants to pass on to student athletes as a key to a successful life. Coach McDougal teaches Health and Physical Education at St. Pius X and lives in Peachtree Corners with her husband and two children.
DON COLEMAN, Assistant Varsity Coach
Coach Coleman returns to the Golden Lions staff in 2020 for his sixteenth season. Coach Coleman is the Assistant Varsity Coach and Pitching Coach. He has coached fastpitch softball for twenty-five years. His experience includes coaching at Agnes Scott College, Chamblee High School and Decatur High School. He is a current board member and past president of Murphey Candler Girls Fastpitch Softball Association. He is a managing attorney with Atlanta Legal Aid Society. Coach Coleman and his wife of 40 years, Jean, are proud parents to two grown daughters, Tiffany and Andrea.
LOREN SOUTHWICK, Assistant Varsity Coach
The 2020 season is Coach Southwick’s ninth year coaching the Golden Lions. A retired sales and marketing executive from the computer and data communications industries, Coach Southwick is now a substitute teacher at St. Pius X. A graduate of the University of South Florida, he also attended Georgia Tech for his undergrad studies and attended graduate school at Georgia State University. Coach Southwick has over 45 years of playing experience in baseball and softball including 20 years of Men’s Open Fastpitch. A multi-talented athlete, he ran cross-country while attending Georgia Tech and also spent time with the Minnesota Twins organization.
JORDYN PORTIS, Assistant Varsity Coach
Coach Portis (SPX '15) returns to the Golden Lions softball program for a second season as an assistant coach. She was a four year starter while a student-athlete at St. Pius X. Coach Portis went on to play softball for one year at Agnes Scott College, where she was named to the Great South Athletic Conference All-Freshman team for helping the Scotties win a conference championship and advance to the NCAA regionals. Currently, Coach Portis is working on her master's degree at Georgia State University.
DONALD HALL, Head Middle School Coach
Coach Hall, a native Atlantan, grew up playing baseball year-round, including some travel teams competing in local and regional tournaments. He is a graduate of Cross Keys High School, where he was a four-time letterman and named to the DeKalb County All-Star team twice. Coach Hall continued playing baseball during his college years and after, in a regional competitive men’s league. Shortly after college, he helped coach both competitive and recreational baseball teams up through Junior High. Since college, he has coached competitive and recreational baseball and fastpitch softball teams, including a stint as a head baseball coach for an innovative Nike program to help bring sports to more children throughout Georgia. Known for teaching fundamentals, sportsmanship and life skills, he has coached recreational and select travel teams for the past seven years. Currently he is the assistant coach for the Atlanta Flames 12U team. Coach Hall and his wife Ashley live in Norcross with their children Ella (12) and Bryant (7).
PETER KOTTKE, Assistant Middle School Coach
Coach Kottke returns to the Golden Lions for his second season as an assistant for the middle school team. Over the past six years, he has coached recreational and select all-star teams in the Murphey Candler Girls Softball Association. Additionally, he is in his second season as the head coach of the 12U Atlanta Flames. Coach Kottke and his wife Maggie live in Atlanta with four of their children: Calvin (16), Violet (14), Wilsie (12) and Florence (10). Their oldest child, Jackson (19), is a student at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa.
JASON DURIEUX, Assistant Middle School Coach
The 2020 season will be Coach Durieux's first as an assistant middle school coach for the Golden Lions. He has coached softball for the past eight years at Murphey Candler Girls Softball Association and the Atlanta Flames. Coach Durieux specializes in working with players on the fundamentals of softball. He grew up playing baseball and played softball as a young adult. Coach Durieux and his wife Shannon live in Brookhaven with their children: Alex (SPX '22), Andrew (13) and Mary (12).
JAY KAPP, Assistant Middle School Coach
Coach Kapp (SPX '94) rejoins the softball program as an assistant middle school coach for the 2020 season. He was the assistant varsity coach for five seasons (2002-04, 2006-07). Additionally, he has coached in the SPX baseball program for ten seasons as head junior varsity coach (2001-04) and head middle school coach (2000, 2005-06, 2018-present). When not on the diamond, you can find Coach Kapp working at Kapp Koncepts, a digital marketing and graphic design firm he founded in 2001. Coach Kapp and his wife, Jenniffer (SPX ‘94), live in Dunwoody with their three children: Charlie (SPX '22), Madeline (11) and Julia (5).
