SPX Middle School Baseball Information

Since 2000, the St. Pius X baseball program has fielded teams in the Middle School League at Dunwoody Senior Baseball (DSB). Our teams have won several championships during that time. The league has four divisions (A, B, C, D). We typically have two teams – one in the “A” division (SPX-Navy) and one in the “C” division (SPX-Gold).

Tryouts
We will hold tryouts for our middle school program during three dates in January. For 2024, the dates are January 7th, 10th and 14th. Tryouts are open to 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Prospective players are expected to attend at least two of the tryout sessions. Pre-registration is required to tryout.

Each player must provide a current physical to be eligible to tryout. Eighth graders must have an application on file with St. Pius X before tryouts begin.

Player Selection
We will create the team(s), post the roster(s) to this website and notify all the players who participated in tryouts.

Season
The season starts after teams are selected and runs through the third week of April. Practices are held at St. Pius X in the baseball facility or on the baseball field. Additionally, practices are held at the Brook Run Park Baseball Fields in Dunwoody and other local parks that DSB partners with. Due to limited field availability during the week, our middle school teams often practice on Sundays at St. Pius X. The season consists of 12 regular games (mid-February through late-March/early-April), and single elimination playoffs during the second and third weeks of April. For both SPX-Navy and SPX-Gold, games will be played at the Brook Run Park Baseball Fields, other local parks and schools. SPX-Navy typically plays every Sunday during the regular season at St. Pius X.

A typical week during the season includes four events (practices and/or games), but there may be a time where there are more. Our coaches will give the practice schedule as far in advance as possible. When DSB creates the game schedule, typically in early February, our coaches will communicate that to the players. Players may have some conflicts, but we expect each member of the team to fully commit to the team and make it a priority to be at all practices and games.

Playoffs will start immediately after spring break (April 1-5, 2024).

Uniforms
Players will be given SPX Baseball “cloth” (hat, practice t-shirts, long sleeve t-shirt, shorts and hoodie). Additionally, players will be issued a jersey that will be returned to SPX at the conclusion of the season. Players are responsible for providing their own game pants (white with navy piping), navy belt, navy socks and cleats. Metal cleats are NOT allowed on the DSB fields, so players will need a pair of plastic cleats or turf shoes.

Bats
For the “A” division in the middle school league, players are required to use a BBCOR (-3) bat. The “C” division allows players to use USSSA or USA Baseball bats that are -5 or higher.

Participation Fee
The cost to participate for 2024 is $500 for current St. Pius X Athletic Association members or $550 for non-Athletic Association members. The participation fee includes DSB Middle School League fees, player cloth package and other necessary team equipment.
