Middle School Baseball
Since 2000, the St. Pius X baseball program has fielded teams in the Middle School League at Dunwoody Senior Baseball (DSB). Our teams have won several championships during that time. The league has four divisions (A, B, C, D). We typically have two teams - one in the "A" division and one in the "C" division, but in some years we have had one team or three teams.
We will hold tryouts for our middle school program during three dates in January. For 2019, the dates are January 13th, 16th and 20th. Tryouts are open to 6th, 7th and 8th graders who are interested in attending St. Pius X for high school. Prospective players are expected to attend at least two of the tryout sessions. Pre-registration is required to tryout.
Each player must provide a current physical to be eligible to tryout. Eighth graders must have an application on file with St. Pius X before tryouts begin.
We will create the team(s), post the roster(s) to this website and notify all the players who participated in tryouts.
The season starts after teams are selected and runs through the third week of April. Practices are held at St. Pius X in the baseball facility or on the baseball field. Additionally, practices are held on the DSB fields and other local parks that DSB partners with. Due to limited field availability during the week, our middle school teams often practice on Sundays at St. Pius X. The regular season consists of 12 games, typically from the middle of February through the end of March.
A typical week during the season includes four events (practices and/or games), but there may be a time where there are more. Our coaches will give the practice schedule as far in advance as possible. When DSB creates the game schedule, typically in early February, our coaches will communicate that to the players. Players may have some conflicts, but we expect each member of the team to fully commit to the team and make it a priority to be at all practices and games.
Playoffs will start immediately after spring break (April 1-5, 2019). Players should plan on having practice on Sunday, April 7th.
Players will be given SPX Baseball "cloth" (hat, pullover, t-shirt, long sleeve t-shirt, shorts, sweat top and sweat pants). Additionally, players will be issued a jersey that will be returned to SPX at the conclusion of the season. Players are responsible for providing their own game pants (depending on the color of the jersey, the pants should be white or gray with navy piping), belt, socks and cleats. The fields at DSB are synthetic turf and metal cleats are NOT allowed, so players will need a pair of plastic cleats or turf shoes.
For the "A" division in the middle school league, all 8th graders are required to use a BBCOR (-3) bat. Players who are in 7th or 6th grade, regardless of the division they are playing in, use a USA Baseball stamped bat that is -10 or higher.
The player fee for 2019 is $450 for current St. Pius X Athletic Association members or $500 for non-Athletic Association members. This fee includes Dunwoody Senior Baseball league fees, player cloth package, coaching stipends and St. Pius X Athletic Association membership at the “Golden Lion” level if needed.
