Info/History
The Tri-M Music Honor Society is an internationally recognized academic honor society available to music students across the country. Sponsored by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME)—America’s largest professional organization for music educators—Tri-M was originally established in 1936 as the "Modern Music Masters". It was founded to provide students with opportunities to collaborate on community service projects through music. In 1983, the organization was formally adopted by MENC (now NAfME) and renamed Tri-M.
Today, there are more than 2,100 Tri-M chapters across all 50 states and 15 countries, featuring 84,000 musicians in grades 6–12. Annually, Tri-M students contribute over 750,000 hours of community service and raise more than $1 million for vital causes within their school communities.
The St. Pius X Chapter of Tri-M was established in Fall 2023. In its inaugural year, it inducted 12 students, instituted a school-wide music service project still in place today, hosted 170 students from across the Archdiocese of Atlanta for a Fine Arts Festival, and served a collective 200 hours of community service.
Requirements
To achieve and maintain membership in the Tri-M Music Honor Society, students must fulfill the following academic and service standards:
Enrollment: Be currently enrolled in a music class at St. Pius X OR be actively engaged in an approved music ensemble outside of school (subject to moderator approval).
- Academic Performance: Maintain an A average in their music ensemble and a B average across all other academic classes throughout the year.
- Service: Complete at least 10 service hours in a designated musical activity.
- Meeting Attendance: Attend all mandatory meetings, held every third Wednesday of the month before school.
- Entrance Project: Complete ONE of the following options:
- Research Essay: Write a 2-page essay on a musical topic of choice, formatted in MLA style and utilizing at least one source.
- Performance: Perform a song (solo or with others) for an extracurricular music event, witnessed by other members of the Tri-M Music Honor Society.
