Prospective Band Members

The band program at St. Pius X Catholic High School boasts a robust offering with opportunities for every type of musician. Whether you’ve been playing your instrument for a year or 5 years, we have a place for everyone in our program. The Marching Golden Lions, our most visible group, rehearses and performs regularly during the fall. Students in the MGL support the football team on Friday nights, and performs competitively on Saturdays in October. Our concert/symphonic band program performs multiple concerts throughout the year, consistently earning high ratings at Large Group Performance Evaluations in the Spring. Our jazz band brings together students who have a passion for jazz, and performs on our spring concert.

In addition to our performing ensembles, our students consistently represent the band program at district and statewide events such as the University of Georgia’s January Band Festival, Georgia Music Educator’s Association District Honor Band and All State, Governor’s Honors, and many others.

If you are interested in becoming a part of the renowned St. Pius X Band Program, we have a number of opportunities for 6th-8th grade students. Please feel free to contact band director Ian LaBreck with any questions.

Incoming Student Auditions
Incoming students for the 2024-25 school year interested in being a part of the SPX Band will be able to audition in person on April 18th from 3:30-5:00 at St. Pius. Auditions are very low stress, and a suggestion is to play one scale and one excerpt of any piece of music. Here is a video from Mr. LaBreck about our program and what we offer.

Youth Honor Band
All middle school students with at least a year’s experience on their instrument are invited to join the Youth Honor Band. This is a group of middle school students who perform side-by-side with high school volunteers on the St. Pius X Spring Band Concert. The YHB meets on Wednesdays during the Spring Semester from 3:30-5:00 beginning on January 31st. Fill out this form to register.

Marching Golden Lion Apprenticeship
Every fall, 8th graders from around the area are invited to perform with the Marching Golden Lions at every home game. These students play with the marching band on the field for pregame, then head to the stands to play with the band and cheer on the team for every home football game.
