The Band Fundamentals class acclimates incoming band students to the SPX high school band environment and cultivates the students’ musical qualities and abilities; it is also open to students who wish to learn a new instrument as a true beginner. The class focuses on some remedial teaching and overall improvement of the students’ musical performance abilities and technique to help prepare them for participation in other band courses. Attention is primarily on developing technique through music theory skills, individual idiomatic study on instruments, and performance in group settings. Students will prepare repertoire for performances as a class.
The Concert Band/Concert Jazz Band course is a year long two-part course. During 1st semester the class rehearses and performs traditional concert band literature; such as classical, and movie soundtrack music. During the 2nd semester, the course title is "Concert Jazz Band" and the group rehearses and performs Jazz band literature ranging from traditional jazz to pop. The class develops and strengthens basic technique through scales and music literature ranging from basic to intermediate levels. The Concert Band plays two required concerts per school year.
The award-winning 'Marching Golden Lions' band performs at every home varsity football game, most away games, and also performs at competitions and fun events throughout the fall. The group normally goes on a major trip every other year. Auditions are held in the spring to be in this group. Game performances, after-school rehearsals (3 per week), and contest events (3 Saturdays) are required. Summer camp at SPX (Mid-July) is also required. Due to the amount of activities the marching band is involved in, all members receive their Varsity Letter in band when they register for their second year of this course. The group performs as 'symphonic band' for the annual Christmas concert.
The Symphonic Band performs intermediate to advanced music literature. To be in this group, a student must enroll in Marching Band first semester, or enroll in Concert Band 1st semster, AND pass an advanced music audition with the director. The group performs two required concerts during the school year. The group also performs at an adjudicated festival event from time to time.
