St. Pius X Alumni Qualifies for Rio Olympics
June 29th, 2016

St. Pius X Catholic High School alumnus Gunnar Bentz '14 clinched a spot on the 2016 United States Olympic Swim Team Monday night in Omaha. By finishing fifth in the 200-meter freestyle event, Bentz claimed a spot on the 4 x 200m freestyle relay team competing in August at the Rio Summer Olympic Games.

By the end of this week, Bentz, also a current member of the University of Georgia swim team, will have competed in five events at the Olympic Trials. On Sunday, he placed fourth in the 400m individual medley with a 4.13.72 time, and finished 15th in the 200m butterfly last night. Bentz will swim in two more events, the 200m IM on Thursday and the 100m butterfly on Friday.

In addition to Bentz, there are two other Golden Lions participating in the Olympic Swim Trials. Rising senior Jeffrey Durmer placed 39th in the 400m IM in his first Trials experience, while Basil Orr '14 competes later today in the 200m breast stroke.
