Marathon of Mercy Information and Sign-Up

The time has arrived for this year’s Marathon of Mercy. This year it will take place on Saturday October 26. There have been a few changes for this year so please read through this information and follow these steps to appropriately register for the  event. Registrations are due by October 18th, but please register ASAP to reserve the project you would like.

1. Below are descriptions of each Marathon of Mercy project that is available. Read through the descriptions to decide which project you are interested in completing.

2. Print and complete the registration/permission form which can be found HERE. It is two pages so be sure you have completed both pages.

3. Please note that this year you will be responsible for your transportation to and from each project. We WILL NOT meet at SPX unless your project takes place on campus.  Driving directions will be provided for you and chaperones will meet you at your project.

4. You are responsible for arriving at your project 15 minutes before the scheduled start time and leaving at the indicated end time.

Below, please find descriptions of this year’s Marathon of Mercy projects:

Project Open Hand’s Meals on Wheels
Time: 10:00- 1:00
Location: 176 Ottley Dr NE, Atlanta, GA 30324
Description: Students and chaperone will go through a short training and then be given routes to follow to deliver meals to medically and elderly challenged individuals
Number: 4 cars/ 16 students

City of Refuge/ 180degree Kitchen
Time: 10:00-1:00
Location: 1300 Joseph Boone Blvd, Atlanta, GA 30314
Description: Students will be helping in the kitchen to prepare meals for the residents.
Number: 6 students

City of Refuge/ Eden Garden
Time: 10:00-1:00
Location: 1300 Joseph Boone Blvd, Atlanta, GA 30314
Description: Students will be working in the garden that supports the kitchen that feeds the families of the City of Refuge.
Number: 10 students

Lions Lighthouse
Time: 9:00-12:00
Location: 5582 Peachtree Rd., Atlanta, GA 30341
Description: Students will be cleaning, sorting, reading and preparing used eye glasses to be sent to 3rd world countries.
Number: 15 students

Stewart Center
Time: 9:00-12:00
Location: 153 Stovall St. NE, Atlanta, GA 30316
Description: Students will be cleaning the center and yard. This center is used for afterschool programs and summer programs for at-risk kids.
Number: 10 students

Foundation for Hospital Art
Time: 8:30-10:30
Location: The Shepherd’s Inn at Atlanta Union Mission, 165 Ivan Allen Blvd., Atlanta, GA 30313
Description: Students will be painting pre-printed murals along with residents of the Shepherd’s Inn. These murals will be hung in hospitals around the nations to brighten the wall and offer hope. No artistic ability required.

Learning on the Log
Time: 10-11:30
Location: Waller Park: 250 Oak Street, Roswell, GA 30075
Description: Energetic, fun, joyful students needed to play soccer with Autistic Children. No soccer skills needed.
Number: 6 students

Time: 8:45-12:00
Location: 3240 Clifton Springs Rd., Decatur, GA 30034
Description: Students will be sorting and packing medications that will be sent to 3rd world countries.
Number: 10 students

Clyde’s Kitchen Sandwich Making
Time: 9:00-10:30
Location: SPX
Description: Students will bring food for sandwiches which they will then assemble to be delivered to Clyde’s Kitchen at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. These sandwiches are given to the homeless people who come for meals. They are given these as they leave so that they have something to eat while on the street.

Elaine Clark Center Hustle for Hope
Time: 8:00-12:00
Location: Keswick Park: 3496 Keswick Drive, Chamblee, GA 30341
Description: Students will help with the Hustle for Hope race which supports the Elaine Clark Center, a center for disabled kids. Students will set up the race, register participants and other jobs necessary to carry out the event.

Hope Lodge
Time: 9:00-12:00
Location: 1552 Shoup Ct., Decatur, GA 30033
Description: Hope Lodge is a home for patients undergoing cancer treatments. It provides free lodging and transportation and a supportive atmosphere. Students will do light cleaning at the lodge followed by playing games such as bingo with the residents.
Number: 10 students age 15 years or older

The Geiger Project
Time: 9:00-12:00
Location: SPX and downtown on SPX buses
Description: Students will bring 2 loaves of bread, 1 carton of juice boxes and a package of individually wrapped chips to use to assemble lunches which they will then distribute to homeless people in the downtown area.
Number: 15 students (wrestling team is doing this)

Time: 9:00-12:00
Location: 3424 Hardee Ave. Atlanta, GA 30341
Description: Birthright is an international organization that helps women dealing with an unplanned pregnancy. Students will be doing light cleaning and organizing as well as assisting with office tasks to support their mission.
Number: 3 students

Wounded Warrior Project
Time: 9:00-11:30
Location: SPX and Wounded Warrior Office
Description: Wounded Warrior provides support to families of soldiers wounded in war. Students will be sorting and wrapping  gifts that the school will be collecting for the Wounded Warrior Christmas program and then delivering them to the Wounded Warrior office and sorting gifts there. Transportation from SPX to the Wounded Warrior office will be provided by Marsha Free on a SPX bus. Students will be returned to school after completing the project.

Monastery of the Holy Spirit
Time: 8:00-1:00
Location: 2625 Highway 201 SW, Conyers, GA 30094
Description: Students will meet at SPX to board SPX buses and go to the Monastery to do clearing and light yard work in the cemetery. Students must bring the Monastery waiver to participate.
Number: 10 students

Global Soap Project
Time: 10:00-12:00
Location: 6901 Peachtree Industrial Blvd, Suite D, Norcross, GA 30092
Description: Global Soap Project recycles soap donated from hotels and reforms new bars of soap that are sent to 31 countries worldwide to provide relief effort and support hygiene education programs. Students will be cleaning soap bars and assisting in the recycling process. Students must bring a waiver to participate.
Number: 15 students

Project Linus
Time: 9-10:30 AM
Location: St. Pius X Catholic High School
Description: Students will meet at SPX and make fleece blankets that are given to children in domestic violence situations.
Number: 15 students

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cancer Home
Time: 10:00-12:00
Location: 760 Pollard Blvd SW Atlanta, GA 30315

Description: Students will be helping pass out lunch and visiting with residents who are seriously ill with cancer.
Number: 3 students

Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement
Time: 9:00-12:00
Location: To be Determined
Description: The activity for this project will be determined as the date gets closer. Students will either be moving a refugee family into an apartment and getting them settled or they will be at an apartment complex playing with refugee children and providing a morning of sports and games.
