Back to School Carpool Information
July 30th, 2018
Welcome to the 18-19 school year! We’ve put together some FAQ for you as you prepare to come “back to school” in the next few days.
First, remember that the first couple of weeks of school everyone is trying to figure out their driving schedule so you can expect some traffic jams around SPX as everyone gets settled into the school year routine. We promise that everything will fall into a more manageable rhythm soon!
How early can my student be dropped off at school?
Students can be dropped off as early as 6:30 a.m.; the cafeteria is open from the breezeway to allow them access to wait for the rest of the school to open at 7:15 a.m. Students may wait in the cafeteria after school as late as necessary for parent pick up. No direct supervision is provided, but adults are present on campus.
Where can my student wait on late start days since they are not allowed into the school buildings until 8:30 a.m.?
Students must report to the cafeteria, breezeway, and front plaza ONLY on any late start school days. Usually late start days are Fridays, but there are occasions when we start late on a Wednesday or other day; check the school calendar for those changes. Students are not allowed into the Math/Science building, the gyms, or anywhere in the main school building until the bell rings at 8:30 a.m. on those late start days. Faculty and staff have mandatory meetings on late start mornings and they are not available to work with students until 8:30 a.m. No direct supervision is provided, but adults are present on campus.
How late can my student stay at school and where can he/she wait for a pick up?
We have students here until late in the evening for sports events, and we also have students who wait for parent pick-up into the evening, some as late as 6p or later. We do not encourage waiting in front of the school. We ask that anyone not waiting in the cafeteria for afternoon pick up to wait behind the school where there are more adults present. Students are welcome to attend sports events on campus after school. Again, no direct supervision is provided, but adults are present on campus.
We ask that students never leave campus for any reason after an early morning drop off or while waiting for a pick up in the afternoon. Students should never go to either Shell station (by Frontier Road or Johnson Road), over to the Publix shopping center across I-85, or down to the convenience store by the 4-way stop on Johnson Road.
How does carpool work?
St. Pius X does not have a carpool pick up system like you might have experienced at your grade school. Parents and students are on their own to meet up for pick up in the afternoon once school has dismissed. Please be clear with your student what time you'll come for him/her and where you plan to meet; students like to socialize instead of move to their cars which means gridlock for everyone. We ask that students get picked up to the back of campus. If you must pick up your student immediately after school in the front circle, your student must come immediately to you in order to keep traffic moving.
What are the hours for the library?
Library hours are 7:30-4:30 on regular school days Monday-Thursday. Library hours are 8:30-3:30 on late start Fridays. Special hours are announced if necessary (i.e. day before a school holiday, early dismissal, etc.)
When is the school closed in the afternoon?
Doors on the perimeter of the school are automatically locked at 3:30 p.m., so students must be in the cafeteria to wait for rides or out of the school building to wait for rides or attend practices by 3:30. Students may not return to the school building to collect books or other items after 3:30.
St. Pius X Catholic High School is a one-way campus. What does that mean?
St. Pius X is a ONE-WAY campus with only 1 entrance on Johnson Road and 2 exits leading back onto Johnson Road, and 1 exit leading to Plaster Road (via the "senior parking lot").
We prefer that parents pick up students behind the school, proceed to the exit, and take a right onto Johnson Road and then either a right or a left at the stop sign at Johnson and Plaster. You will find that as a one-way campus everyone must enter from Johnson Road which makes a left turn back out onto Johnson Road very difficult and then continues to back up traffic on campus which means others cannot enter campus because there is no movement while others wait to enter the campus and make their way around to pick up students.
You can also exit campus through the "senior parking lot" which is the parking lot to the right of the main exit driveway which leads to a down ramp and an exit onto Plaster Road.
If you do choose to use the front circle for pick up you are also requested to exit campus by making a right turn onto Johnson Road and then a right or a left at the stop sign at Johnson and Plaster.
If you take a right onto Plaster Road it will lead you up to Buford Highway.
If you take a left onto Plaster Road it will lead you to the service road that runs along I-85 which will take you south to the fly under a mile down on your left which leads you back north on the service road to Shallowford and I-85 North access. Further down the service road you'll come first to Clairmont Road and then to North Druid Hills Road.
Please remember that we are here to help! Remember to check your Student Handbook which is available on PSLearning under the Deans Pages, and is a searchable pdf document once you download it to your desktop. You can search topic words like "attendance" or "uniforms" or "late start" or "detention" ... and the search will take you to each location where the words appear. We are looking forward to a fabulous school year and look forward to seeing you back in the halls in a week!
