CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel junior defensive lineman Joe Crochet has been nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, it was announced Wednesday.

Crochet has been active in the Charleston community as well as his hometown of Stone Mountain, Georgia. He frequently visits local schools to encourage students, and each of the last two summers he has volunteered as a youth football camp coach at the Mount Pleasant Recreation Center to help teach proper techniques. He also has volunteered for Leadership Day, where he works in Charleston to assist others with home-improvement projects. In the summer of 2014, he spent more than 20 hours restoring his youth football park, Tucker Fitzgerald Field, in Stone Mountain as a way to give back to those who helped him begin his football career.

Crochet, who graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration in three years and is now pursuing his MBA, was named The Citadel's Defensive Player of the Year last season. He recorded 32 tackles, including 3.5 for loss, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two quarterback hurries. His forced fumbles total tied for third in the Southern Conference and 27th in the FCS, and his two forced fumbles in the Bulldogs' 45-25 win at VMI tied for the highest single-game total in the SoCon and for the second-highest single-game total in the FCS last season.

Since 1992, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team has recognized college football student-athletes who exemplify a superior commitment to community service and volunteerism. The select group of student-athletes nominated for this award by their respective coaches and universities balance academics and athletics while remaining committed to helping others and bettering their communities. In order to meet the criteria set forth by Allstate and the AFCA, each nominee must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining a strong academic standing.

The final roster of 22 award recipients, consisting of 11 from FBS and 11 from FCS, Division II, Division III and NAIA, will be selected by a special voting panel of former Allstate AFCA Good Works Team members and prominent college football media members. The team will be unveiled in September.
