Geno Smith - Pius Alumni in the news
July 20th, 2013

Rising true sophomore corner Geno Smith was one of Alabama's top freshman contributors along the defense in 2012, particularly down the stretch, starting two games and seeing time at Nickel.

Smith is currently running with the second team at corner. On top of battling with John Fulton and Cyrus Jones for one of the corner spots, sources indicate Smith could be in line to start at Nickel this season. Those sources also say that the Atlanta native continues to show many of the the same attributes that landed him on the field as a true freshman -- he's a smart, mature, high football IQ player who works hard.

Should he earn a starting nod at Nickel this season, Smith's career arc could be similar to that of current New York Jet corner Dee Milliner. The first-rounder started at Nickel as a sophomore and was behind Dre Kirkpatrick and Dequan Menzie at corner before sliding into the starting role in the 2012 season.

A product of Atlanta (Ga.) St. Pius X, Smith ranked as the no. 4 cornerback prospect in the 2012 cycle's final 247Composite. He is the top ranked prospect to sign with the Crimson Tide at the position dating back to Milliner, who was the nation's top corner in the 2010 cycle, according the 247Composite.
