SPX Students Take First Place at Odyssey of the Mind Competition
March 31st, 2015

Congratulations to three St. Pius X students, Andrew Hopkins '16, Morgan Hernandez '16, and Julia Hernandez '17 who won first place alongside two Marist students and one Blessed Trinity student at the recent Odyssey of the Mind competition.  Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. By applying creativity to solve issues, they bring solutions to competitions on the local, state, and world level. The State of Georgia has had an Odyssey of the Mind program for over 30 years.  Thousands participate each year worldwide, including students from St. Jude, Holy Redeemer, Queen of Angels, St. John Neumann, and Notre Dame Academy.

The competition includes a long term problem portion, which consists of a theatrical and engineered solution, and a spontaneous portion, where the team must solve a problem on the day of the competition in less than eight minutes.  Students must meet early and often to begin work solving the long term problem.  Our high school team of these combined students began meeting in October of 2014.

Special thanks to Mrs. Pam Hernandez, who coaches the collaborative team.  Be sure to check back for more information this coming May, as our students will be competing at the World Finals at Michigan State University.  We wish them the best of luck as they prepare!
