Sports Recap for Week of Oct. 25

The last week of October ushers in the first week of winter sports practices at St. Pius X while the fall sports continue toward region and state playoffs. Football moved to the No. 7 spot in the AAAA Score Atlanta poll. Boys’ and girls’ cross country find themselves Nos. 1 and 3 in their respective ga.milesplit.com polls. Softball and volleyball had seasons end in the state playoffs.

The Golden Lion football team defeated Arabia Mountain 70-38 to move to 6-2 and 6-0 in Region 6-AAAA. Joey Connors rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns, while Ransom Klinger found pay dirt three times and gained 136 yards on the ground. Dalton Wilson and Grant Holloman had two rushing scores each as St. Pius X did not attempt a single pass in the win. The Golden Lions will host Stone Mountain Friday night for Senior Night.

The St. Pius X Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country will travel to Marist for the Region 6-AAAA meet on Wednesday at 4:30pm. In the last event, the boys’ team took second place in the Coach Wood Invitational Oct. 18 and were the top AAAA finisher. Stephen Martinez and Ryan Kelly finished 19th and 24th respectively to lead the Golden Lions. The lady harriers were paced by Rebecca Entrekin’s eighth place finish in the Gold competition on their way to first place in the meet.

The Golden Lion volleyball team finished the season 39-12 after dropping at state quarterfinal match to Buford on Saturday. Earlier in the week Jessica Onourah and Clare Naughton recorded six kills each and Ryan Boykin 12 digs, to lead St. Pius X to a 3-0 win over Carrollton in the second round.

Softball saw its’ season come to an end in the second round of the playoffs. After knocking off former region 6-AAA rival Woodward in the first round by scores of 2-0 and 5-1, the Golden Lions were eliminated by Buford. St. Pius X ended its season 18-17.

Finally, the Golden Lion Competition Cheerleading will compete Saturday at McEachern.
