Bentz, Stewart Perform Well at US Olympic Swim Trials
July 13th, 2012

Based on their recent performances at the US Olympic Swim Trials last month, rising juniors Gunnar Bentz and Kylie Stewart have been selected to the US Junior Pan Pacific Swim team.  The two will compete in the upcoming Jr. Pan Pacific Championships in late August.

At the Olympic Swim Trials, Stewart finished fifth in the finals of the women's 200-meter back stroke and was edged out in ninth place in the 100m back stroke in the semifinals.  The top eight qualifiers advance to the finals of an event, and top two in the finals to the Olympic team.  Bentz had strong showings in the 200m and 400m Individual Medleys.  Swimming in the same heat in the 400m IM as eight-time Olympic Medalist Michael Phelps, Bentz finished fifth.  His time in the 200m was 12th overall of 68 swimmers.

Both swimmers will travel to Honolulu in late August to swim in the Junior Pan Pacific Championships.  The charter nations of the Pan Pacific Championships are the US, Canada, Australia and Japan.  New Zealand and other Pacific Rim countries are allowed to compete as non-charter members.  The championships will take place at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center from August 23-27.
