Final Exams: Helpful Information
December 8th, 2016

Locker clean out happens TOMORROW, Friday, (12/9) at the end of the school day. Students must clean up lockers and remove any clothes, lunch/food items, trash, etc. leaving only school books, notebooks, and class materials for Christmas break. Doing a thorough locker clean out at the end of each semester helps prevent ant and rodent infestations. Please be prepared with extra bags/backpacks if you have lots to take home.

Elective exams take place the 4 days prior to core exams during the regular school day. Elective exams days for this semester are on Monday (12/12) through Thursday (12/15). Students should be on campus only for the exam(s) they must take. Students who have to wait on campus for carpool must wait in the area designated (will be announced) and are not allowed to go to any other location on or off campus. While waiting, students may use only their SPX approved laptop or tablet for studying. Absolutely no cell phones, MP3, etc. allowed. (See below for additional information re electronics)

Snacks are not provided to the students at exam time, but the cafeteria will be open for business (see below). Students are also welcome to bring snacks from home (or to purchase from the vending machines) and consume them during the break time. Snacks are allowed in the cafeteria and on the breezeway/plaza during break time, but never in the school buildings.

All students should be picked up no later than 12:30 pm each exam day. If your student has an athletic or fine arts practice he/she should follow the coach’s instructions for being on campus.

If your student is involved with Study Support for his/her exams he/she should follow all directions from Ms. Peck or Mr. Stewart.

STUDENTS MAY NOT USE ELECTRONICS DURING CORE EXAM DAYS FROM 7:55 –11:45 am. This ban is in effect for students waiting for rides, students waiting for an exam, arriving during the exam break, or any other situation. Again, ALL electronic use is banned for all students from 7:55 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. Please keep in mind that electronics includes all forms of electronics, to include but not limited to cell phones, unapproved tablets or computers, iPads, iPods, etc. If a device is required for an exam the student should use that device only during the exam time as noted by the teacher. Students are asked to leave cell phones or other unneeded devices at home, or safely contained in a locker. Students may use SPX approved laptops or computers for study.

Cell Phones/Electronic Devices DURING EXAMS

In keeping with the national testing policy and due to a nationally growing concern about students’ ability to transmit – in a matter of seconds- exam questions to others around the world, cell phones and other electronic devices are prohibited from all exam rooms and may
not be used during the breaks in between exams.

 Students MAY NOT have any cell phones or any unapproved electronic devices on their person, in their purse, backpack or any other type of baggage. Electronic devices must be turned off and stored in lockers or vehicles during exam hours from 7:55 a.m. until 11:45 a.m.

 Calculators may ONLY be used on mathematics and/or science exams as noted by the teacher. Calculators will not be allowed at any other time and are considered to be an "electronic device" as noted in this explanation.

 Cell phones must remain turned OFF and in a locker from 7:55 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. If, at any time, a cell phone or other electronic device is seen or suspected of being on a person it will be confiscated, inspected and held by administration until the 6th/last school exam is COMPLETED at which time a parent may pick up the phone (or electronic device) from the Dean of Students from 11:45 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. After that time, phones will be available for retrieval in January (following December exams) or teacher post planning days following the May exams.

This policy is in effect for all students including those students who do not have an exam and must wait on campus or waiting for early pick-up between the hours of 7:55 am and 11:45 a.m. Electronic devices may not be seen or heard between the hours of 7:55 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. This procedure is in keeping with national testing procedures with Educational Testing Service (SATs, ACT’s and AP exams in particular).

It is very important to note that students who are waiting for a ride between 7:55 am and 11:45 am will NOT be able to accept a cell phone call or text from a parent to notify the student of a parent’s arrival on campus. Please arrange for a specific location pick up in advance. Students who need to reach a parent by telephone are instructed to come to the Dean of Students office to use the phone to call home. Parents who need to reach a student during exam time are to call the office (404-636-3023) so that a message can be delivered to a student.

If you are sick and cannot attend school for a core class exam a parent must contact Mr. John Griffith (jgriffith@spx.org) about the absence. Students who miss final exams because of illness will receive direction from Mr. Griffith at that time about make up exam(s).
