Device Policy for Exams

Cell Phones/Electronic Devices DURING EXAMS
In keeping with the national testing policy and due to a nationally growing concern about
students’ ability to transmit – in a matter of seconds- exam questions to others around the
world, cell phones and other electronic devices, including all watches, are prohibited from all
exam rooms.
 Students MAY NOT have any cell phones or any unapproved electronic devices on their person,
in their purse, backpack or any other type of baggage. Cell Phones and unapproved electronic
devices must be turned off and stored in lockers or vehicles during exam hours from 7:55 a.m.
until 11:45 a.m.
 Students may use their school approved personal electronic devices (no cell phones) to study
before and after their exams and during the exam break but may not bring these devices with
them into the exam rooms. Devices should be turned off and stored in students’ lockers during
their exams. Students, who do not have an exam but choose to remain on campus during an
exam period, may use their devices.
 Devices not allowed in the classroom during exams include but are not limited to cell phones,
smartwatches, watches, tablets, computers, iPods, etc. If a device is required for an exam, the
student will be informed about this in advance and will only be allowed to use that device during
the exam time as noted by the teacher. Normal consequences for misuse of electronic devices will

Calculators will not be allowed at any other time and are considered to be an "electronic device"
as noted in this explanation.
 Cell phones must remain turned OFF and in a locker from 7:55 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. If, at any
time, a cell phone is seen or suspected of being on a person it will be confiscated, inspected and
held by administration until the 6th/last school exam is COMPLETED at which time a parent
may pick up the phone (or unapproved electronic device) from the Discipline Office from 11:45
a.m. until 12:30 p.m. After that time, phones will be available for retrieval in January (following
December exams) or teacher post planning days following the May exams.
This procedure is in keeping with national testing procedures with Educational Testing Service (SATs,
ACT’s and AP exams in particular).
It is very important to note that students who are waiting for a ride between 7:55 am and 11:45 am will
NOT be able to accept a cell phone call from a parent to notify the student of a parent’s arrival on
campus. Please arrange for a specific location pick up in advance. Students who need to reach a parent
by telephone are instructed to come to the Dean of Students office to use the phone to call home. Parents
who need to reach a student during exam time are to call the office so that a message can be delivered to a
