Commencement Ceremony Held May 18
May 20th, 2013
Congratulations to the St. Pius X Catholic High School Class of 2013 as they walked across the stage at the Cobb Energy Centre over the weekend to receive their diplomas and become the newest alumni of the school. The 242 students became the 55th graduating class of St. Pius X.
Principal Steve Spellman addressed the class, reminding them of their first day at St. Pius X four years earlier. On that first day, he described the successes of the Class of 2009 and challenged the Class of 2013 to leave behind a rich class legacy over their four years; a challenge that this class took to heart. Students from this highly successful class graduated with the highest SAT scores in the history of the school and were accepted at over 175 colleges and universities across the nation. They will matriculate to 68 different schools in the fall. The seniors earned over 11.9 million dollars in scholarship money (a number which does not include the HOPE Scholarship or athletic money). Mr. Spellman reminded the graduates to “Follow the blueprint that made you such a success at St. Pius X: Be yourself and remember your roots, you will always have a home at St. Pius X and we will greet you with open arms and a hug.”
The graduates listened intently to valedictorian David Spratte and salutatorian Barbara Anne Kozee as they addressed the group, reminiscing about their time as students and looking forward to their futures. “Life is about embracing failure, taking risks, and making yourself vulnerable. The successful of today are so because of the risks they took yesterday; because of the dreams they dreamt yesterday and continue to dream today,” said Spratte. In her speech, Kozee described how her class continually exceeded expectations throughout their time at St. Pius X, “I hope that whatever you do and wherever you go that you always rise up. Never settle for what others have in mind, because it’s your life and you are in control of your destiny.”
Prior to the awarding of diplomas, Fr. Bryan Small ’92, pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Church, was recognized as the recipient of the 2013 Distinguished Alumnus Award. Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory distributed diplomas to the graduates and proudly presented his annual Archbishop’s Award to Lauren Massey and Frank Martin.
With a mixture of sadness and excitement, we bid a fond farewell to the Class of 2013 as they move forward in their lives. We know that they will continue to leave marks on society and the world, just as they have left us with an enduring legacy of excellence. We pray that God will always guide their ways; wish each of them a lifetime of happiness and success; and welcome them as the newest group of St. Pius X alumni!
