Questions for Freshman Classes Shakespeare and Romeo and Juliet

1.Where and when was little Billy Shakespeare born?

2. Give three facts about Queen Elizabeth I that you find interesting.

3. Find a painting depicting Romeo and Juliet and print it.  What scene does it illustrate?  Write a few facts about the painting.

4. Romeo and Juliet was probably written about 1595.  What family tragedy occured about the that time, and what national state of emergency was occuring also about the same time?

5. Life in Shakespeare's time was very different from today. Give 3 examples.

6. Find and explain one of the following as it pertains to Shakespeare:

                          "Lost Years"      or      "upstart crow"

7. What caused the Globe Theatre to burn down?

8. Find a couple of interesting/odd things in The Elizabethan Times (Link #7 above) and jot them down.

9. Read about costuming and write down 2 or 3 observations about the clothes.

10. Romeo and Juliet takes place in Verona.  Find Verona on a map.  Write down something about the location or Verona.

11. What is an Apothecary called today?

List your two favorite sites and write a sentence or two telling the reason you liked these sites.
