Resources for Literary Criticism 
  1. Check Safari catalog --We have a collection of literary criticism available for check out. Most of these books will be found in the 813s. Do a Subject Search on your author or a Title Search to find specific titles and call numbers.

  2. Reference Books -- These are your best sources for scholarly criticism.  These books are found in any academic library (including ours) or good public library.  Use the Literary Index to easily find criticism from these volumes.

  3. Subscription Databases  The following information databases are available.  Using them off campus requires a username and password.  Password information for all information databases is available in the library at the information desk.

    EbscoHost Literary Reference Center

    The Student Resource Center Gold will find criticism for the major works studied in high school.  Hint: Click on Literature Search, then Title Search to go directly to the specific work you are going to read and write about.

    Litfinder includes the full-text of poetry, short stories, essays, plays, speeches, biographies, work summaries and explications.

An Evaluated Search Directory should always be used for academic research.  Avoid the big engines like Google.  Use the smaller directories like the Librarians Index to the Internet that will lead you to more reliable sites.

IPL Online Literary Criticism Collection  This site indexes literary criticism on the free Internet.  Although the criticism on this directory is scholarly, we do not recommend that you start here because it's rather tedious to search here.  Use the databases from section 3.  The search is easier and you will have more to choose from.
