Dance: A Resource Guide

Reference Books make great starting points!

REF 792.78 INT  The International Encyclopedia of Dance  Six volumes.  Includes: extensive surveys of all forms of dance; descriptions of dance techniques; essays on the music, costume, and scenic design that have accompanied dance.  Individual dancers, choreographers, producers, companies, and dance works are featured as well.

REF 792.8 INT International Dictionary of Modern Dance  Provides information on dancers, choreographers, teachers, companies, designers, writers on dance, national overviews, and selected important dances.  The Western world is emphasized, but coverage is global.

REF 792.845 GRU
The World's Great Ballets  A brief introduction to ballet history leads to the descriptions of selected  ballets.  Each description includes: the circumstances of its creation, the personalities involved, its critical reception, and an analysis of its style.


Subscription Databases

    Online encyclopedias make excellent starting points.  Read for background information, then use their suggested Web sites for more information.
    Highlights key events, movements, people, and places in 20th-century America.
    We recommend using the AP Source and/or MAS Ultra for this project.
    The New York Times is an excellent resource for dance reviews.
    You can find some really great articles in JSTOR.  These articles come from professional dance journals.
    Use ProQuest to locate recent reviews of dance perfomances or current information about a dancer or choreographer.
    This database is an excellent resource for biography as well as topical essays.

  • American Ballet Theatre Contains biographical information on the ABT's featured performers and soloists.  You can access information about past ballets by browsing through the archives.
  • Ballroom Dance Resource  Contains information for beginning and experienced ballroom dancers. Included are history of and instruction in the waltz, tango, foxtrot, Viennese waltz, cha cha, rumba, salsa, east and west coast swing, and the lindy hop.
  • Free to Dance explores "the crucial role that African-American choreographers and dancers have played in the development of modern dance as an American art form." Includes a timeline (1619-2001), historical and thematic essays, biographies of African-American dancers, and recommended resources.
  • Irish and Scottish Dance
