Significant
Ongoing Conflicts
The
Quaker lobby group Friends Committee on National Legislation
(FCNL) classifies significant ongoing conflicts as those in
which more than 1,000 have been killed. As of January
2007, the FCNL and the Center for Defense Information reported
there were fifteen significant ongoing armed conflicts in
the world-- the ones listed involving African nations and
the date the conflict began are:
- Democratic Republic of Congo
(formerly Zaire)
& idigenous insurgents, 1997
- Nigeria: ethnic and
religious communal violence, 1970
- Somalia: Somaliland,
Puntland, and other factions, 1978; 2005
- Sudan & Sudan
Liberation and Justice and Equality Movements, 2003
- Uganda & Lord's
Army, 1986*
