Definition:
The name Antifederalists was fixed upon the
opponents of the adoption of the Constitution of the United
States (1787-88) by the supporters of the Constitution, who
appropriated the more attractive designation Federalists.
Although Antifederalism thus came to be defined in relation
to the Constitution, it originated as a political force during
and after the American Revolution and represented those
who favored the retention of power by state governments, in
opposition to those who wanted a strong central government.
