SOUND / AUDIO for Projects & Presentations:
Locating Royalty-free Music

A word about copyright:

You're unlikely to get sued for using copyrighted music in a school project within the four walls of the school, but once you distribute it more widely (YouTube, for example), you're treading on shaky ground legally.

What you can do:

  • Ask the permission of the copyright holder and get permission in writing,
  • compose your own soundtracks, or
  • use out of copyright or royalty-free music.

Adapted from Jon Bounds. Windows movie maker 2: zero to hero.  Berkeley, CA: Friends of ED, c2003.
The Library recommends several sources of royalty-free music for student projects. Some are on CD and available in the library (like those pictured), other sources may be found on the web by following the recommended links at the bottom of this page.

The library has a decent collection of royalty-free music including the following genres: world music, classical, holiday music, jazz, electronic, decades, themes, sound effects, etc.
