Mr.
Sean Hiland has taught Social Studies at St. Pius X Catholic High
School since 2002. He teaches AP Comparative Government, AP
United States Government, American Government, American History,
and World History.
Mr.
Hiland graduated from Aquinas High School in Augusta before completing
his Bachelor's degree in political science at Augusta State University
. He interned as an undergraduate with the Augusta-Richmond
County Solicitor's Office. His post-baccalaureate work was
done in comparative and international politics at the University
of South Carolina (main campus). Mr. Hiland completed his
teacher certification in secondary social studies at the University
of South Carolina-Aiken. His teaching internship was at North
Augusta High School in South Carolina .
Before
coming to St. Pius X, Mr. Hiland was a member of the faculty at
Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach , FL where he taught
U.S. and World History for four years. While there, he coached
the boys varsity golf team to the district championship.
Since
being at St. Pius X, Mr. Hiland has proposed, written curriculum
for, and taught the Social Studies department's newest course -
AP Comparative Politics. In addition, he has coached the Forensics
Team (formerly known as "Debate") for four years.
His last two years as Forensics Coach has seen St. Pius X qualify
for the prestigious National Tournament twice.
Mr.
Hiland currently lives in Decatur with his wife, Julie Duvall Hiland
(St. Pius X class of '96).
