Students investigate the history of journalism
in the United States of America. Media Law, journalistic ethics,
and daily news coverage are investigated to encourage students to
be better reporters and consumers of news in the information age.
Proper interviewing techniques, and layout design with an emphasis
on page elements for communication purposes are discussed.
Proper photography technique and operation are covered extensively
culminating in personal production of black and white photos from
conceptualization to darkroom production. This course is a
prerequisite for the school newspaper, yearbook, and literary/art
magazine staffs. A computer lab and darkroom allow students
to explore and create projects. A $50 darkroom fee and access
to a camera are required for this course.

The newspaper class is responsible for the
complete production of six or more issues of the student newspaper,
Golden Lines, each school year. Students improve their basic journalism
skills of reporting, writing, editing, design and production learned
in Journalism I through the practical experience of producing the
student newspaper. Students are responsible for all aspects of financing,
managing and producing the newspaper. Staff members are appointed
to positions by the newspaper adviser and the editorial board. Students
are expected to spend some time outside of class to produce the
newspaper.

This journalism course teaches hands-on production in the design and publication of the school literary/art magazine, Carpe Diem. Through the practical experience of producing the magazine, students learn and develop the basic magazine journalism skills of soliciting and evaluating students' literary and artistic work, planning, marketing, financing and publication design. Students are expected to spend some time outside of class to produce the magazine.

This journalism course teaches hands-on production
in the design and publishing of the school yearbook, Golden Echoes.
Through the practical experience of producing the yearbook, students
learn and develop the basic journalism skills of reporting, writing,
editing, layout design, photography and the business skills of organization,
planning, marketing, finance and distribution. Students are expected
to spend some time outside of class to complete their assignments.
