NOTICE CONCERNING NATIVE SPEAKERS:

Students whose native language is not English may not be allowed to enroll in beginning level foreign language courses in their native language. A student is considered a native speaker if one of the following is true:

1. The foreign language is a common means of communication at home.

2. The student has lived and studied in the foreign country where the language is spoken (including military bases) for at least three consecutive years within the last five years and the student exhibits native or near native fluency in the language.

St. Pius X offers Spanish for Spanish Speakers I and II for our native speakers. Students may be asked to take a placement exam and/or submit to an oral interview to determine their proficiency in the foreign language. Final decision on placement of native speakers will be determined by the St. Pius X Foreign Language Department.

NOTICE CONCERNING HONORS, AP, AND OTHER UPPER LEVEL COURSES:

A grade of A in the preceding course is generally expected of students entering an Honors or AP foreign language course. Likewise, a grade of an 85 or higher in the preceding course is generally expected of students entering an upper level (III, IV and AP) college prep course. Nevertheless, final determinations as to enrollment in all courses will be at the discretion of the department and will be based on teacher recommendations. Initial placements will be reviewed during the month of April to determine whether students have continued to demonstrate the ability, skills, work habits, and motivation that justified the original (February) placement. Appropriate adjustments will be made at that time.

Real-life situations presented in authentic French help the student acquire high levels of communicative proficiency in various contexts as well as cultural awareness and appreciation. In this course the student continues his or her study of French on a more advanced level. Stress is placed on spoken proficiency in context while the student continues his or her appreciation of francophone cultures. Short informal and literary texts are introduced to teach both grammar and culture. Technology is fully implemented and audio and print materials serve to build and reinforce listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing skills. The course is taught entirely in French.

The multi-media course continues the study of French language and culture on a more advanced level and at an accelerated pace. Students must exhibit enthusiasm for the study of French and a desire to communicate in French at all times during class. Emphasis is placed on communicative proficiency (listening, speaking and writing) as well as interpretive proficiency (reading); students engage in regular group discussions in French as well as routine oral interviews with the teacher. Technology is fully implemented and audio and print materials serve to build and reinforce listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The course is taught entirely in French.

This course addresses the needs of advanced students of French. It is a comprehensive, multiple-approach course that provides an in-depth view of France , its culture and civilization by means of a systematic introduction to French history and literature. Grammar previously studied is reviewed and expanded upon with a view to strengthening the students' language skills. This course is a prerequisite for students who wish to enroll in the AP French course.

This course is designed for self-motivated students committed to serious study in French. A prescribed course of study including advanced grammar topics, advanced listening comprehension exercises, advanced reading comprehension exercises, and advanced spoken practice will be presented in order to prepare the student for the Advanced Placement Exam. College credit may be awarded on the basis of the evaluation and the particular colleges' or universities' policies.

Using a communicative language approach, this course is an introduction to Spanish vocabulary, grammar and syntax. A variety of methods and materials are used to provide cultural awareness and to build elementary reading and writing skills. Using a conversational approach, emphasis is placed on building listening and speaking skills in Spanish. The course is taught mostly in Spanish. Students who earn a D in the first year of the language are strongly urged to undertake some form of review over the course of the summer.

Using a communicative language approach, this is a course taught entirely in Spanish designed to teach the Spanish speaker to learn to read and to write Spanish. It is primarily a grammar review course in which students will be taught rules which will enable them to write and to spell correctly in Spanish. Some reading will be done in order to reinforce spelling and grammar points and to enable the students to become fluent in reading Spanish. This course will be offered in the fall of 2008.

A continuation of Spanish for Spanish Speakers I, this course is taught entirely in Spanish. This advanced grammar review course will enable the students to write and spell correctly in Spanish. Students will be required to read in Spanish. This course will be offered in the fall of 2009.

This course is an introduction to the Latin language and Roman culture. Students learn Latin using a reading comprehension approach and study the influences of the language and ancient Roman culture on later civilizations. Culture, vocabulary, derivatives, phrases and prefixes, mythology and other elements of the Roman world and Latin language are also covered throughout the year.

Using a reading comprehension approach, students continue their studies of the Latin language and ancient Roman culture. Students then are introduced to more advanced Latin through the study of classical writers. The course is designed for students who are able to progress more rapidly. Students begin more in-depth study of Roman history and begin reading ancient Roman authors. This course serves as a transition to Latin IV and more extensive study of classical Latin literature.

This course is designed for students who wish to pursue their advanced readings in classical Latin literature. Students will continue their studies of the Latin language and ancient Roman culture through the reading comprehension approach and continue the reading and translation of Latin authors and poets. The course offers students the opportunity to study the ancient works of writers such as Catullus, Ovid, Vergil and Cicero, as well as obtain a more in-depth knowledge of Roman history. The studies of original Latin literature are supplemented with comparisons to later literature in English as a means of studying how the ancient writers influenced other authors.
