Below is the list for summer reading. Please check your class schedules to match up your reading assignment with your English class number. It is important that you PURCHASE these books, as you will need them in class in the fall.

Please note:
You must annotate your books! Click here to download “HOW TO ANNOTATE A BOOK” (pdf)

(You must have a copy of both books to use in class)

English I Lit/Comp Section 23.0610724

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton (annotate)

Also choose one selection from the SPX READS! List

(You must have a copy of both books to use in class.)

English I Lit/Comp Section 23.0610734

Read both of these books:

Watership Down by Richard Adams (annotate)

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

(You must have a copy of both books to use in class.)

Read one of the following:

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte OR

The Once and Future King by T.H. White

(Take brief notes on the book you choose so that you will be able to answer a few questions about it. You will need to know things such as the characters’ names, the setting, the major plot points, and the major conflicts.)

Hey kids,
Some of you have contacted me about your confusion over the summer reading assignment. You simply need to do what the web page tells you.

1. You must read Watership Down and annotate it carefully.

2. You must read, or reread, To Kill a Mockingbird. Since many of you have studied this book in detail in middle school, I see no need for you to annotate, but you certainly may if that helps you. It always helps me. If you have never read this book before, you had better annotate so
that you will be able to find important passages when we write about it.

3. You must read either Jane Eyre or The Once and Future King. Annotation of this text is not a requirement, but we will be writing about it; therefore, if you want to annotate it you certainly may. I would if I were in your shoes. At any rate, you should take some notes so that you will have ready access to memory prompts about plot points and character names.

I hope this clarifies your assignment. I will see you in August.

Sincerely,
Ms. Stockard
