St. Pius X High School Fast-Pitch Softball Summer Camps

St. Pius X Fast-Pitch Softball will be offering two summer camps in June 2010.  All levels of experience are welcome!

The first, a week-long camp from June 7-11, will focus on offensive and defensive fundamental skills.  If you are interested in honing your offensive and defensive skills in a spirited environment, or if you want to discover if fast-pitch softball is a game for you, then the Offensive and Defensive Skills Camp is for you!  Click on the link below for a flyer and registration form.

2010 Offensive and Defensive Fast-Pitch Softball Skills Camp

The second camp will be offered on consecutive Saturdays in June, the 19th and 26th, and will be a Pitchers and Catchers camp.  The Pitchers and Catchers workshop will cultivate and hone fundamental softball skills for the pitching and catching positions.  Catchers will be introduced to a variety of techniques to improve their presence behind the plate; skills taught will include situational stances, plate set-up, pitch receiving, blocking, footwork, base-stealing, fielding, field command, and pitch calling.  Furthermore, Catchers will discuss the vitality of the position: that catchers serve as the ‘quarterback’ of a softball team’s defense.  Pitchers will be taught the principle techniques for the fast-pitch motion: how to generate velocity, how to create spin, how to create arm speed, the importance of balance and momentum, and will also be taught a number of drills that can be performed at any location to improve pitching skills.  Finally, each pitcher will have a chance to throw to a catcher and be given an assessment of skills: what they do well, what they need to work on, and suggestions for how to improve in those areas.  If you're interested in the SPX Pitchers and Catchers Camp, then click on the link below for a flyer and registration form.

2010 Fast-Pitch Softball Pitchers and Catchers Camp

The Pitchers and Catchers camp will also be a great opportunity to work with the SPX Varsity Coaching Staff.  Head Coach Joseph Winland will lead the Catchers. The 2010 season will be Coach Winland’s second season as the head varsity coach. In his inaugural campaign, Coach Winland led the Golden Lions to a 24-11-3 season and a Final Four finish at the State Championship in Columbus, Ga. Last year, the Lady Lions finished 17-9 and captured their second consecutive Region Title. Prior to leading the Softball Program, Coach Winland coached Catchers with the Varsity Baseball Team since 2006. Coach Winland played Catcher at the University of Richmond, was the All-Tournament Catcher at the 1995 Babe Ruth World Series, and was the Defensive Player of the Year for a team that finished fourth at the Connie Mack World Series in 1996.

Coach Coleman will lead the Pitchers. Coach Coleman is the Assistant Varsity Coach and Pitching Coach. He has coached fast-pitch softball for nineteen years; his experience includes serving as the Pitching Coach at Agnes Scott College, Chamblee High School, and Decatur High School. His development of SPX Pitchers has been a profound contributing factor in the success of the Varsity Fast-Pitch Softball team the last four seasons. He is a well-respected, sought-after pitching coach in the metro and surrounding Atlanta areas. He is a current board member and past president of Murphey Candler Girls Fast-pitch Softball Association.
