Congratulations!

Tess Bailie's drawing, "Bottled Mummies" (Seen below) was one of fifty finalists accepted from 450

submissions to the Georgia High School Drawing Competition.

We are very proud of her accomplishments and the rigor she applies to her artwork.

A Visit to the High Museum

The Exploring Painting class took a field trip to see the artwork at the High Museum recently.

Here are some photos of the class experiencing the work.

Art Day. In two days six members of the Art Association helped over 70 children create monoprints and had

a great time doing it too! Participating students were: Rachel Pruckler, Kristina Templeton, Toria Munoz,

Michelle Boltz and Elena Pendergrass and of course the wonderful students at Dresden Elementary, especially

two fifth graders, pictured below who were fantastic and tireless helpers.

Field Trips & Competitions

It is the aim of the Visual Arts Department to expose the students in the various classes offered, to a selection

what Atlanta has to offer. This year, with the help of Mary Stanley the students in the Advanced classes went

to The Museum of Contemporary art and experienced a photography workshop with Atlanta artist Matt Hafner.

They also went to see The Andrew Wyeth exhibit 'Memory and Magic'. Both of these experiences enriched their

work and it was amazing how the students took on board the photography techniques Matt uses in his paintings.

The sculpture class also went to Cherry Lion studios where they were able to learn from the atelier master

himself, Martin Dawe. If you did not know this already, Martin Dawe is responsible for the magnificent sculpture

of the bronze men carrying the world at the Northern end of Peachteree St. The students were incredibly

fortunate to be able to learn from Martin Dawe (his classes are booked solid for the year) and they were

delighted at the end of the day with what they had accomplished and learned.

The Claywork classes went to the Carlos museum to see at first hand what they had been studying in class.

This museum is one of the gems of Atlanta, and houses a fine collection of South American pottery and a

fantastic collection of Greek vases. We were also fortunate to have Jo Ann Paschall-Derby come and give

a demonstration of the art of bookbinding to the Printmaking class. Having been the Director of Nexus

Prints here in Atlanta since its inception............her skills were definitely impressive and inspiring.
