The 2005 Alumni Classic
was a day to remember for the players returning to St Marlo for
a day in the sun after a two year hiatus. The weather was perfect
all day for the 111 golfers that participated. Principal Steve
Spellman was joined by Coach Standard and Coach Maloof for a tour
of the course to see old friends and to make a few new ones.
This year the tournament
was lead by Bill Meagher '76 who was assisted
by an all star committee. Bill recently became a proud St.
Pius parent and brought his extensive tournament experience and
enthusiasm to the Classic. His passion for golf and for St
Pius all came together to produce the most successful tournament
in the 11 year history of the event. He will continue to be the
chair for next year and already has great plans for the future.
He was also one of the top procurers of prizes, he was 100% successful
in finding quality prizes for our contest winners.
The tournament committee
worked very successfully on all aspects of the planning of the event.
Mark Doelling tackled recruiting players and he
was able to produce a record number of registrations. The
momentum is building for a sell out next year. Kelly McKenzie
was charged with finding sponsors and did a great job of contacting
alumni and getting a record level of support. Chick Munhall,
Mike Phelan, Mike Dolan and Dev Maguire all worked on sponsors,
gathered prizes and gifts. They were so successful that all
participants were able to walk away with a quality prize.
I want to especially thank Chick Munhall and Dev
Maguire for putting together the goodie bags on Sunday.
Alumni Board
The board actually produces
the tournament and they did a fantastic job this year. Outgoing
Alumni Association President Mike Dallas led the
volunteer corps duties of setting up and running the event.
Thanks also go to incoming Alumni Association President Karleen
Ferguson '84 for the breakfast and her help during the
day. Keith Carter and Tony Lentini
watched the hole-in-one contest all day, a lonely job. Keith,
by the way, is one of the unsung heroes of the board, consistently
helping to produce our events. Mike Fannon
'74 ran the putting contest this year and we thank Mike for his
efforts, he had a great time with the golfers all day. Mark
Haddad '77 and son Nick Haddad
'04 comprised the only father-son volunteer effort ever. Special
thanks to Lauren Mouzayck Spivey '98 for taking
off the entire day to help.
