Bentz '14 Earns Gold Medal in Relay Event
August 10th, 2016

Gunnar Bentz '14 earned a gold medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay at the Rio Olympic games.  He swam on the relay team in the prelims Tuesday afternoon, helping the team to a No. 2 seed in the finals held late Tuesday evening.  Replaced, along with teammates Jack Conger and Clark Smith, by Conor Dwyer, Townley Haas and Michael Phelps, Bentz earned a gold medal by virtue of the team capturing the gold in the evening session.

Bentz became the first Golden Lion, and first male swimmer from the University of Georgia, to win a gold medal in an Olympiad.  The United States has won the 4x200m free relay gold in every Olympic games since 2004.

Bentz is the second Golden Lion Olympian. Ralph King '74 qualified in track and field for the US team for the XXII Olympiad in Moscow.  He was unable to participate due to the US boycott of the Moscow games in response to the erstwhile Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan.
