Parent Technology Agreement
February 8th, 2013

February 8, 2013

Dear Parents of Freshmen,

I would like to make you aware that St. Pius X has recently received a very generous gift of  Nexus 10 Android tablet computers to bolster the use of current technology in our curriculum.

These tablets are a gift from the Speedwell Foundation and are part of a pilot program sponsored by Net Texts, Inc.   Net Texts, Inc. is a software company that is working to develop Open Educational Resources (OER) for use in Catholic schools.   The Net Texts company was founded by St. Pius X alumnus Michael Messner ’71 in 2010 when Mr. Messner became interested in the potential of using tablet technology in the classroom.  The Net Texts software allows teachers to customize their courses through the software program, providing a platform for the integration of written material, instructional videos, worksheets, web links and their own materials.  This pilot program will assess using tablets (in this case the Nexus 10) to increase student engagement and performance.  Subjects using tablet based courses on the Net Texts software will expand the resources available to students through a variety of channels including video lessons, audio lessons, work books and collaborative exercises.

Utilizing Open Educational Resources (OER) has the potential to greatly reduce or eliminate the need for textbooks as we know them.  Students will also have a superior organizational tool at their fingertips, an essential component of learning how to manage time.  The pilot program will include all members of the class of 2016 and will be led by faculty members who have volunteered to be part of the pilot.  Each freshman will receive a Nexus 10 tablet to use for the rest of this school year, subject to the St. Pius X Computer and Internet Usage Policy in the student handbook.  Students will return the tablets at the end of the 2013 school term.  The pilot program evaluation will be used in part to develop the school’s technology policy.

All of us are truly appreciative of Mr. Messner’s continued kindness toward St. Pius, especially with this recent gift that has very positive long term implications for our use of technology in preparing our students for their future in the 21st Century.

Please review the Technology Loan Agreement and return a signed copy to the front office by February 15th.  The tablets are scheduled to be distributed during the week of February 18th.

Warmest regards,

Steve Spellman
Principal
