Show the Love for Mr. McIntyre
October 9th, 2013
A Special Message from the Athletic Director...
My letter to you today has nothing to do with athletics. I write to ask for your help with a St. Pius X family member.
Last December, Matt McIntyre, an English teacher and softball coach, here at St. Pius X, discovered he had leukemia. Some of you know Matt. Many of you do not. For lack of a more descriptive way of describing him I will simply tell you that Matt is “a good guy.” He and his wife have four children, the oldest of which is 8. They live in Decatur and attend St. Thomas More church. Since December he has been in and out of the hospital receiving chemotherapy. The goal of that treatment has been to get him into remission so that he can receive a bone marrow transplant. The treatment has been successful to a point but has not wiped out the leukemia cells. The body, however, can only tolerate so much chemo. Matt will have his transplant in the next six weeks.
When we hear news like this very often our immediate reaction is to wish we could come up with a cure for a disease like cancer or wish that we could perform a miracle and make the disease go away immediately.
But I think Mother Teresa said it best when she said, “We cannot do great things on this Earth, only do small things with great love.”
I am asking for your help in four ways:
· First of all I ask that you pray for Matt and his family. There is no better medicine than prayer.
· Secondly, I ask that you consider giving blood at our fall blood drive on Thursday. October 10 or at the Holy Cross blood drive on Saturday, December 7. Matt will require a great deal of blood. For the St. Pius X Fall Blood Drive, click here. For the Holy Cross blood drive, please visit www.redcrossblood.org and use the sponsor code “holycrosscc.” If you live out of town please give somewhere.
· To help with providing meals, please visit http://www.carecalendar.org/logon/160959 and enter the following information in the appropriate spaces: CALENDAR ID: 160959 SECURITY CODE: 5897. Please be sure to look at the latest news section on the left of the calendar to see the proper directions for providing a meal.
· Finally, as you can imagine, this has all created a significant financial strain on the McIntyre family. To that end, on October 10, the same day as our blood drive, we will have an “Out-of-Uniform” day in honor of Matt. Any student who donates $5 or more can come out of uniform. Directions on how to donate can be found here. If any of our alumni would like to give, you can simply send a check to St. Pius X, noting that it is for Matt McIntyre.
I talk to Matt a lot. I cannot begin to tell you how profoundly appreciative he and his family are of all the support they have received. These “small things” will continue to let the McIntyre family know that we are with them in every way.
