Kate Ward '12 Participates in Deaflympics
July 25th, 2013

Deaflympic gold medalist and 2012 St. Pius X alumna Kate Ward will join the United States soccer team as they participate in the upcoming games in Sofia, Bulgaria. Ward expects to be a starting midfielder, the same position she played at the 2009 competition, as the team faces Greece on Friday, July 26.

The Appalachian State University sophomore was diagnosed as being deaf in one ear when she was three years old due to an auto-immune issue, and by the time she turned six, she had lost hearing in both ears. Ward’s father enrolled her in a soccer program when she was four and she quickly took to the sport. She joined the United States team in Taiwan in 2009, where they took home the top award. The team hopes to repeat the performance again this week. Be sure to check back for more details!
