Michael (Mike) Wentzler - Boys' Varsity Head Coach

Coach Wentzler is entering his inaugural season with the Golden Lions at St. Pius X Catholic High School as the Head Boys' Varsity Coach. He comes from North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee, GA where he served as the Boys' Varsity Head Coach for 6 years. While at North he racked up a record 57-50-4. Making playoff births in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2015. In 2013 he was named the Region 7 AAAAAA Coach of the Year.

In addition to coaching at St. Pius X, Coach Wentzler serves as the goalkeeper coach for the Emory University Women's Soccer Program. While with Emory the team has made 4 appearance to the NCAA National Tournament with a trip to the National Final in 2012.

As a player, Wentzler was a two-time NAIA all-American for Berry College in Rome, GA during his collegiate playing days. He also earned all-conference and all-region honors in 2006 and 2007, and was named the Southern States Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 2007. Wentzler graduated from Berry in 2008 with a Bachelor of Sciences, majoring in Biology with minors in Chemistry and Women’s Studies.

Preceding his career at Berry, Coach Wentzler attended Duluth High School where he played for the varsity team for all 4 years. All 4 years at Duluth his team made playoff appearances with a trip State Semi-Finals in 2002 and the State Finals in 2003.

Wentzler holds a USSF National ‘D’ Coaching License as well as a NSCAA Goalkeeping Level 3 License certification.

 

 Jonathan (Jonny) Mercado - Boys' Varsity Assistant Coach

Coach Mercado is entering his inaugural season as the Boys' Varsity Assistant Coach. He brings a wealth of knowledge of the game as he joins the St. Pius X coaching staff. Coach Mercado has coaching experience at both the high school and club level. He served as the Boys' Assistant Varsity Coach at Greater Atlanta Christian Schools for the 2016 season in which he helped lead the Spartans to the State Semi-Finals. In 2013 Coach Mercado was the Boys' JV Head Coach and Varsity Assistant at Dorman High School in Roebuck, SC.

In addition to high school experience, Coach Mercado has been coaching club for over 4 years. He has served as the head coach a number of academy and select teams at various age groups for GOL Soccer Academy (GSA).

In 2014, before beginning his coaching career Coach Mercado spend a year playing professionally on the Atlanta Silverbacks Reserve Team. His professional stint, he spent 4 years playing for the Presbyterian College Blue Hose in. Prior to his collegiate career, he was a 4 year varsity starter for Providence Christian Academy.

Mercado holds both his USSF "E" and National "D" Coaching Licenses.
